The Best Month to Visit Porto, Portugal (+ 9 Reasons Why)

Porto, Portugal, is one of my all-time favourite cities in Southern Europe! It has everything a traveller could want—delicious cuisine, stunning architecture, captivating history, and an incredible climate. Well… almost.

Not every month is ideal for visiting Porto. Pick the wrong time, and you might find yourself caught in rain, wind, and chilly temperatures.

So, when is the best time to go? If you want pleasant weather, start by planning your trip in the summer months between May and September.

But what’s the absolute best month to visit Porto? That would be August! And I’ve got nine reasons to prove it.

#1. The Porto Weather (Obviously)

Porto’s weather in August is pretty much perfect. There’s barely any chance of rain in Northern Portugal, and temperatures are comfortably warm—sometimes even a little hot.

But no worries! You’re right on the Douro River, so if things heat up, just take a river cruise or head to the beach to cool off.

To be specific, here are some key August weather stats for Porto:

• On average, only 2 days of rain the entire month.
• Average temperature will range from 68°F (20°C) to about 85°F (30°C).

#2. Outdoor Dining

This one goes hand in hand with that amazing weather. As I mentioned, Porto sits right on the Douro River, with wineries on one side and the old city on the other.

Both riverfronts are packed with restaurants and bars where you can feast on fresh sardines and sip Port wine while soaking in the views.

Some must-visit outdoor dining spots include:

• Bacalhau – A lot of restaurants by the riverfront are kinda touristy. But Bacalhau is great! Try the codfish dishes and local wines.
• Temple D’Ouro– Located on the other side of the river Vila Nova de Gaia (or just Gaia for short) where all the wineries sit.
• Ar de Rio – Perfect for people-watching with a glass of vinho verde and snacks.

#3. Epic Sunsets

In August, Porto treats you to long summer days and almost guaranteed cotton candy skies at sunset. The warm glow over the Douro River and the city’s terracotta rooftops is pure magic.

For the best sunset views, head to:

• Foz do Douro – Where the river meets the Atlantic, offering breathtaking seaside sunsets.
• Miradouro da Vitória – A hidden gem with stunning panoramic views of the river and Ribeira district.
• Jardim do Morro – A popular park in Vila Nova de Gaia, perfect for watching the sun dip behind Porto’s skyline.

#4. Beach Clubs & Outdoor Activities / Summer Events

Porto in August isn’t just about scenic views and great weather—it also knows how to keep the party going after dark, especially at the beaches. With warm summer nights, bars, rooftop terraces, and riverfront spots are buzzing with energy.

Some must-experience spots include:

• Esplanadas & Rooftop Bars – Grab a drink with a view at places like Mirajazz or Espaço Porto Cruz.
• Beach Clubs – Beach clubs and open-air venues, like Daikiri Lounge Bar, throw summer parties and live music events.
• Nightlife in Galerias de Paris – This downtown street is packed with bars, making it the place to hop around and stay out late.

#5. Surfing & Watersports

If you’re into surfing and watersports, Porto in August is calling your name. With warm temperatures, great waves, and plenty of sunshine, it’s the perfect time to hit the water.

Top surf schools where you can take lessons or rent gear:

• Onda Pura Surf School (Matosinhos Beach) – Great for all levels.
• Fish Surf School (Espinho) – A laid-back beach spot south of Porto.
• Surfivor Surf Camp – A popular multi-day surf camp with accommodations.

Beyond surfing, you can also try paddle boarding, kitesurfing, or even jet skiing!

#6. Open-Air Markets & Street Performers

Porto’s streets are at their most lively in August. The warm weather brings out bustling markets and talented street performers.

Best places to experience the vibe:

• Feira da Vandoma – A massive flea market with antiques and vintage finds.
• Bolhão Market – A historic market spilling into the streets with fresh produce and artisanal goods.
• Ribeira & Rua de Santa Catarina – Hotspots for street musicians and performers.

#7. Less Crowded Than Lisbon & the Algarve

While Lisbon and the Algarve are packed in August, Porto remains a bit more relaxed. It won’t be empty, but you won’t be shoulder-to-shoulder with crowds.

And while hotel prices are at their summer peak, they’re still lower than in Lisbon or the Algarve. That’s just a fact.

#8. Port Wine Harvest Season

August marks the start of the Port wine harvest season! If you love wine, this is the perfect time to visit Porto and the Douro Valley.

What About the Off-Season?

Here’s what to expect:

• January is likely the worst month to visit — I know because I’ve done it.
• Rain is common, and temperatures are much cooler.
• Yes, you’ll get lower hotel prices, but it comes at the cost of missing out on Porto’s lively atmosphere.

If you don’t mind unpredictable weather and a quieter vibe, winter could work for you. But if you want the best Porto experience, August is hands down the time to go!
