Many Greek Islands I’ve visited have been very walkable. Islands such as Rhodes, Symi, and Crete. It hadn’t ever occurred to me that I may need to rent a car.
Milos is a little more remote and less traveled. As a result, there isn’t a major infrastructure set up for public transit.

Milos is a Greek island located in the Aegean Sea, and it’s one of the most beautiful places in Greece I’ve ever been to.
There are many great things to see on this wonderful island, most of which are located outside the main town of Adamas, not within walking distance. You’ll be limited in what you can see and do without a car. This blog post will discuss some of the best attractions on Milos worth exploring.

To fully explore the volcanic island of Milos, you will need a car. First, let’s talk about the beautiful beaches. Milos is home to some of the most stunning beaches of blue waters in Greece, such as Sarakiniko Beach, Kleftiko Beach, and Apollonia Beach.

The Cost of Renting A Car in Milos
The cost to rent a car in Milos will vary a bit depending on the season and availability of the vehicles. The average car rental cost was between 60 and 100 euros per day. To get the best prices you really want to use Discover Cars!
I had spoken to a girl who was lucky enough to find a place renting them for 45 euros a day, but it was in the shoulder season. The best way to ensure you will find a car with the most affordable prices is to make online bookings in advance.
Keep in mind a taxi one way from the south coast of the island to the east coast of the island could cost as much as 45 euros. So it is vital to find rental cars with low prices now and lock it in.
Driving in Milos appeared to be very easy. There wasn’t a lot of traffic, and the drivers didn’t appear to be aggressive. Some narrow roads required you to be extra cautious, but nothing too concerning.
If you are driving in Milos, you will need to be cautious of the scooters and ATVs on the road. Going slow is the best strategy. A lot of the roads are dirt roads, which can be fun in an ATV!

In summer months Milos Car Rentals do book up rather quickly! If you don’t book in advance, most cars will be rented which may leave you in a bind.

What types of cars are available in Milos Greece?
If you reserve your rental car in advance you will have the most choices. If you are looking for luxury cars or convertible rentals they book out first.
Most of the cars you will see on the island are small cars. Just have a look at Discover Cars and inquire, they provide excellent service.
Renting an ATV in Milos
Perhaps a more affordable and fun option for car rentals is renting an ATV in Milos! I will admit that I was not brave enough to do this, but I met someone who was! She paid 60 euros daily and said it cost her 17 euros in gas to fill the tank.
Generally speaking, the major roads in Milos are paved, but some dirt roads are on the way to the remote beaches.
Driving in Milos on an ATV was popular among tourists because it was slightly cheaper than renting a car.
You can easily go off the beaten path to those small villages when renting an ATV.
Renting a Scooter / Moped in Milos
If you are an experienced and licensed scooter/moped driver, you can rent one in Milos. However, I am told you need an international driving license for motorcycles and be at least 18 years old. A few travelers I met were disappointed as they couldn’t rent one.
From what I witnessed in Milos, the drivers were all respectful of the ATVs and Scooters. Sharing the road didn’t seem to be an issue.
In other places I have visited, the pace on the road was a bit aggressive, unlike in Milos.

Greek Island Day Trips With A Rental Car
If you have your own transport, it is so easy to spend the whole day driving around Milos. Something I will have to do on my second trip!
Start your day at a beautiful beach, and perhaps rent a boat! There are many boat tours from the island of Milos! Sailing trips around Milos can be booked HERE.
If you are not interested in a boat trip, check out the famous seafood restaurants that are only accessible by driving. The best seafood restaurants are Medusa, Astakas Cafe Restaurant, and Sirocco Volcanic.

Best Hotels to Book with a Milos Rental Car
Some hotels in Milos are just not a good idea to stay at if you don’t have a car. They are too far away from everything there is to explore in Milos.
But with a rental car, they are the most amazing hotels on the island!
If you are wanting a remote hotel, they are often at the end of a long dirt road. Keep that in mind when looking at different available car types to rent in Milos.
- Blue Mare Apartments on the Beach is located in Firopotamos, this hotel is the ultimate escape and is perfect if you to be beachfront with ocean views.
- Magic Klima IV is another great choice in a hotel where you really do need a rental car to get there. Otherwise, you are taking a taxi from the port or Milos airport and are more or less stuck there.
- Terra Mare Suites is located in the picturesque fishing village of Agia Irini very close to Sarakinko Beach.

If you are dead set against renting a car and driving in Milos, you want to stay in the towns most connected with the bus. Those towns are Adamas and Pollonia.
Adamas is the town in the port and has the most connections to popular spots and remote beaches such as Sarakiniko Beach, Pollonia, Klima, and Plaka.
My honest feedback about relying on the buses is it will be limiting. I don’t feel there is enough frequency in the pickups and drop-offs. This could change as tourism increases annually.
If you are staying in Pollonia and want to visit Sarakiniko Beach, you will first need to take a 15-minute bus ride to the Adamas port and then wait to board another bus to take you to Sarakiniko Beach. Timing the routes can be a little annoying.
For this reason, having a rental car in Milos makes a lot of sense.
Milos Public Bus Service and Schedule
Please note that the Milos Bus Schedule changes weekly, so you should check it frequently. Since most people visit in the peak season, I have linked the Milos Bus Schedule for a week in August.
The bus network covers a limited number of this wonderful island’s main attractions. Some quaint villages can only be seen if you have your own vehicle.
You will be able to take the bus to the famous Sarakiniko beach. However, if you want to visit the fishing villages, such as Klima, you need your own car.
Note: There is a bus to Milos Domestic Airport, but there are not often enough pick-up times.
Where to Stay in Milos, Greece Without a Car
Looking for the best place to stay in Milos without a car? I would recommend either Pollonia or Adamas Port. These two spots offer the most in things to do and frequency of bus trips.
Adamas is an easy choice if you have just a couple of days. It will be the most convenient spot to stay will little time to explore.
If you have more time on the island, Pollonia is the better place to stay. Pollonia has great seafood restaurants and the best beaches.
From Pollonia you can take a short ferry ride to the Greek island of Kimolos. Check the ferry schedules below.

Is safe to rent a car in Milos?
Renting a car in Milos Greece is very safe. I had the best experience on the island all by myself. If you are also planning a solo trip to Greece, rest assured I had no concerns at all.

Final thoughts on getting a rental car in Milos
It was my first visit to Milos, and I would have planned my trip differently if I had read more before arriving.
I made the mistake of not staying close enough to the center of town and needed to take costly taxis a lot of the time.
It was not easy to explore Milos when only relying on the bus schedules. Other islands like Crete, Symi, and Rhodes have more to see without a car.
If you want to visit Milos Island and not rent a car, pay a lot of attention to where you will stay. Look into all that Milos offers and figure out the best way to see everything.
Ultimately I think you do need to rent a car in Milos, but you can get by without one.
